Baylor Astrophysicist Assists in NASA Telescope Launch

The Roman Space Telescope launched at approximately 7:30 a.m. EDT Sunday, August 30 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The telescope is set to arrive at its final orbit in three months.

Baylor University astrophysicist and assistant professor of physics, Dr. Benjamin Rose, Ph.D, is one of four leaders to work on the part of the project that helps develop data analysis for Roman’s supernova cosmology research. As part of a NASA-funded infrastructure team, he assists with the overflow of knowledge the telescope sends back to Earth. “Something that would take 1,000 months in the past would now require just one month of Roman operation,” Rose said in a Baylor press release.

DJ Lagway, son of former Baylor football player Derek Lagway (BSED ’01), continues his family’s legacy by stepping into the starting quarterback role at Baylor this season. The University of Florida transfer made quite an impression in his time there but is now trading in the Gators for the Bears.

Lagway will make his Baylor debut as the Bears face the Auburn Tigers in their season opener at 2:30 p.m. CST September 5 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Reigning number one out of 20 nominees, the Baylor Line won the USA Today Sports 2026 Readers’ Choice Award for Best Walk-Out Tradition. The 50-year old tradition was voted first ahead of national competitors including Auburn University’s Tiger Walk and Texas A&M’s “Power”.

Before home game kickoffs, first-year students line up wearing customized gold jerseys and run across the field, swarming the turf with gold. At the last home game of the season, the seniors run the line for the last time, finalizing their time at Baylor with this, now award winning, pregame tradition.
