Ventriloquist visits
Ventriloquist, stand-up comedian, and 1986 Baylor grad Jeff Dunham is bringing his Artificial Intelligence North American Tour to Foster Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 3. Dunham’s performance marks the next in a string of performances at the arena-turned-entertainment venue, following Forrest Frank, Lauren Daigle, and others. Tickets are on sale to the general public today.
And did you know Dunham won The Baylor Line’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award in 1998? What a small world.
From grandma to graduate
Carolyn Price, 83, will become the oldest known doctoral recipient in Baylor history, graduating from the online Ed.D. program. Carolyn applied to two programs at 79 years young, and chose to attend Baylor after facing age discrimination from the other school and remembering a leadership seminar she attended here in 1979. In December, Carolyn suffered the devastating loss of both her husband of 61 years, Daniel, and her home in a fire. She persevered through the heartbreak, and will cross the stage as Dr. Price this weekend.
So long, farewell
Students aren’t the only ones bidding adieu to the University this weekend–several faculty members will retire their posts as well, including:
- Vice President for Student Life Dr. Kevin Jackson,
- Graduate School Dean Dr. Larry Lyon (’71),
- University Chaplain Dr. Burt Burleson (’80),
- Dr. Lynn Tatum (’75),
- Baylor Law School Dean Brad Toben (JD ’77),
- Dr. Cassy Burleson (MA ’00),
- And so many more.
An unlikely hub
Editor emeritus Robert F. Darden reported for the Overby Center on how Baylor became the unlikely center for the study of Black gospel music. Darden–who started the effort out of frustration with the unavailability to access the music–writes about the project from its inception, born out of an angry New York Times op-ed piece, to its current current status with ore than 60,000 digitized gospel music recordings.
Home grown
Former Baylor standout basketball player Matt Sayman will return to the Greater Waco area as the head coach of Midway High School’s boys basketball team. Sayman played for the Bears from 2000-2004, setting a school record by playing in 118 career games. He later went on to win a national title playing professionally in Iceland and coached for 12 seasons at Grapevine Faith Christian School.
Fumble!
Baylor is reasoning with the NCAA this week after wide receiver Ashtyn Hawkins’ eligibility to play this season was revoked. According to On3, “Due to players with JUCO experience receiving another year from the NCAA, Hawkins was originally told the same applied to him. However, he recently announced on Instagram Live that the NCAA went back on their word.”
