Team USA
Baylor basketball is already getting its reps in. With a whole new team under head coach Scott Drew, the Bears are in Germany to represent Team USA in the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. USA is one of 16 countries being represented in the men’s basketball competition. The Bears have remained undefeated and are playing for the gold on Saturday against Team Brazil (5-0).
In game one against Team India, the Bears pushed for the win, with six players in double-figures, notably freshman guard Drew Perry nailed a three to put Team USA past 100 points in the last quarter. The Bears continued to advance through the competition defeating Team Latvia (84-77), Team Romania (85-65), Team Finland (102-83), and Team Lithuania (72-64).

On the women’s tennis team, 5 athletes earned Scholar-Athlete titles. 994 Division 1 men’s student-athletes, with 159 men’s tennis programs awarded with the All-Academic distinction.
Breaking Gaps in Mental Health
Dr. Karen Foli, the inaugural Louise Herrington Endowed Chair in Mental Health Nursing, blends her professional experience and personal insight to her work, particularly in understanding trauma among nurses and within adoptive families. In an episode of Baylor Connections, Dr. Foli stated,“I want to strengthen families. For both nurses and parents, if you can help them take care of their wellbeing, they’ll be able to be better caregivers themselves.” This research is important for integrating mental health support into caregiving professions, where it has traditionally been under-addressed.
In Tune
This spring, Baylor had a record-setting 23 Fulbright recipients. This week, the university announced that Philip Borter, D.M.A, assistant professor of cello in the Baylor School of Music, is the sixth faculty member since 2022 to be selected for Fulbright U.S. Scholar award.
Dr. Borter study in Brazil where he will immerse himself in the vibrant musical traditions of Rio De Janeiro and connects him to his long-standing artistic pursuit. During his two months there, Borter will work with Hugo Pilger, a leading cellist in Brazil and a scholar on the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos. In an article from Baylor, Borter said, “I’ll have the chance to study manuscripts, perform alongside native musicians and experience firsthand the cultural context that gives this music its spirit.”
