Welcome to the official ‘Episode One’ of The Baylor Line’s flagship podcast, The Green Room.
In this episode host Jonathon Platt is joined by author and public defender Jeanne Bishop live at The Baylor Line’s BookTalk event on May 16 commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing. In it, the two unpack behind-the-scenes details of Jeanne’s book on the attack, Grace from the Rubble; the makings of her article on Cindy Campbell Brown, the only Baylor graduate in the attack; and parallels Jeanne has drawn between those stories and the story of her own sister, a recently married, pregnant woman who was senselessly murdered in her own home. The conversation is raw and emotional as Jeanne shares her thoughts on mercy, justice, our responsibility to carry forward the stories of those we’ve lost, and on forgiveness – of others, and perhaps more difficult, of ourselves.
Though she’s embarked on some of the toughest interviews a journalist could fathom – one with Bill McVeigh, the father of Timothy McVeigh whose senseless act took 168 lives, and another with Ron Brown, whose wife was one of those 168 – Jeanne offers a peak behind the curtain on how she handled these conversations with poise, dignity, and most of all, compassion.
What’s next from Jeanne Bishop? I guess you’ll just have to listen and find out (hint, we could soon be reading about Jeanne’s own experience through a Christian lens and tales from her career as a public defender).
We’ll have more new episodes of The Green Room for you every Monday and Thursday – stay tuned for the incredible list of guests we’ve already lined up, namely:
