The Baylor Brief – February 21, 2025

We want to keep you up to date on the latest news around the Baylor bubble. This week, women's basketball maintains its winning streak, an engineering professor testifies before a senate committee, and more.

Sing Season is Upon Us

The smell of hairspray and stage makeup lingers in the air. The Stacy Riddle Forum becomes a battleground and costume party. Moody Library feels a little emptier than usual. Ah, Sing season.

Shows started with club night on Thursday and will continue on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights through March 1. No worries if you weren’t able to get tickets – the event sells out Waco Hall with ludicrous speed. You can catch the acts streaming live at 6:30 p.m. on March 1.

A New Class Explores Waco’s Hispanic History

Waco’s Mexican American Experience – a new class debuting this spring – is introducing Baylor students to the history of the Hispanic community that surrounds them. “The spaces we navigate every day are not devoid of history,” professor Dr. Ricardo Álvarez-Pimentel said.

Engineering Professor Testifies at U.S. Senate Committee Hearing

I may not be SMART enough (pun intended) to write about this, but I’m sure going to try. Dr. Charles Baylis, director of Baylor’s Spectrum Management with Adaptive and Reconfigurable Technology Hub (SMART Hub), testified Thursday before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce Science and Transportation. The committee – chaired by Sen. Ted Cruz – convened for a hearing to “examine the critical role of spectrum policy in driving the U.S. economy, maintaining the U.S.’s technological edge over China, and strengthening national security.”

Baylor Student Warms Hearts in the Cold

Senior Kitron Ferrier took to the streets on Wednesday, spreading warmth on one of Waco’s coldest days. Starting at his own storage unit, Ferrier ran an impromptu coat drive, delivering spare jackets to those seeking refuge at the Salvation Army’s warming center.

Keeping Up with Baylor Basketball

Women’s – The Bears moved from No. 25 to No. 19 this week after a 66-60 win against Texas Tech over the weekend. On Wednesday they faced Colorado and maintained their seven-game win streak – the longest active streak in the Big 12.

They’ll play Iowa State on Saturday at home, with just three games left before the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in Kansas City, Mo. As the end of the season draws near, ESPN Bracketology predicted the Baylor women will take the No. 6 seed in this year’s NCAA tournament. They’re tied for first in the Big 12 with a 13-2 conference record, 23-5 overall.

Mens – The men’s team won its match against West Virginia last weekend, 74-71 in overtime. The team had help from recently recovered Langston Love, who shot 12-for-12 from the line.

However, the “undersized and shorthanded Bears” lost to No. 19 Arizona in front of a capacity crowd on Monday at home. They hit “a dismal 22.7% (5-of-22) from 3-point range,” according to Baylor’s recap.

The team looks to improve its 16-10 record overall, 8-7 in Big 12 Conference play, facing Colorado on Saturday. In ESPN’s most recent Bracketology watch, Baylor remained the predicted No. 9 seed in the Midwest for 2025’s NCAA Tournament.

Spring Sports in Bloom

Baseball – In its season-opening series, Baylor baseball managed a three-game sweep over Youngstown State. Junior left-handed pitcher Ethan Calder was named a Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week for his performance as opening day starter.

The team faced UTSA on Tuesday, ending the game with a 5-0 shut out. It’ll face Gonzaga next in a three-game series at home over the weekend.

Tennis – The women’s team (8-1) looks to maintain its six-match winning streak playing against Washington State Friday afternoon. The men’s team hasn’t been so lucky this season, most recently falling to No. 18 in the ITA DI Men’s National Team Rankings and holding a 7-6 record overall. It will face Tulsa on Sunday.

Golf – The men’s golf team finished tied at No. 17 at The Prestige at PGA West in its spring slate opener. The women’s team will travel next week to the Bruin-Wave Invitational at UCLA and the men will travel next weekend to Los Cabos, Mexico, for The Cabo Collegiate.

Want to play alongside the Bears? Sign your own team up by March 6 to play in the 42nd Annual Curtis Hankamer Classic on March 11 at the Golf Club of Houston.

Softball – The No. 23 softball team ended the Getterman Classic at home with an 11-3 run rule win over Hofstra, before falling 8-0 to No. 3 Oklahoma. The team has another full weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

Acrobatics & Tumbling – The dominant A&T team’s season is off to a hot start (as usual), winning its two first matches against No. 5 UMB and No. 14 LIU. Leavy McDonald earned her first weekly honor as NCATA Freshman of the Week for her performance against LIU. The team faces off against No. 4 Oregon this weekend.

Track & Field – The T&F team is resting up this weekend after concluding its regular season at Texas Tech’s Jarvis Scott Open. Senior Nathaniel Ezekiel was named Co-Big 12 Men’s Athlete of the Week after becoming the first athlete in the NCAA to record a sub-45 time in the 400m.

The Bears travel back to Lubbock next weekend for the Big 12 Indoor Championship, before the NCAA Indoor Championship to round out this spring’s indoor season.

And… Pickleball? Though technically not an NCAA-recognized sport, pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country. Baylor won’t be left behind. Baylor’s competitive club pickleball team will find a new home at the Paul and Jill Underwood Pickleball Courts, a 12-court facility replacing the four eastern courts of the McLean Tennis Courts. “Assuming they’re completed in time, the new courts are set to host a regional tournament for club teams across Texas on March 29,” according to The Lariat.
