A Rock and a Hard Place
Baylor researchers found that both passive and active use of the very social media platforms designed to bring people together actually contribute to the loneliness epidemic. Predictably, browsing without interaction led to increased feeling of loneliness, but active use, including posting and engaging with others, was linked to the same feelings.
I’m guilty of passive use lately. I recently came into ownership of The Baylor Line’s Instagram account after deleting the app entirely for a few years (for this very reason – its use caused feelings of loneliness) and now I can’t help but do the occasional lurking on my personal timeline. I wonder what future social media research will look like as children are brought up in the digital age … were humans ever really meant to interact in this parasocial way?
Keeping up with Baylor Basketball
WOMEN’S – The No. 25 women’s team is on a five-game winning streak heading into its matchup with Texas Tech this weekend, with a 21-5 record overall, 11-2 in Big 12 Conference play.
Junior Darianna Littlepage-Buggs’ efforts in last week’s games against Houston and BYU earned her the title of Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday. The Bears’ 83-71 win over BYU at home brought them into a tie with TCU (23-3, 11-2) for first place in the Big 12, and they maintained that tie with a 75-65 upset over No. 18 West Virginia.
MEN’S – The men’s team kept up the excitement in Saturday’s doubleheader at Foster Pavilion with a 91-76 win over UCF. However, it wasn’t so lucky in its matchup against No. 6 Houston on Monday.
The Bears lost redshirt junior Josh Ojianwuna to a season-ending injury early in the game against UCF, but welcomed back freshman VJ Edgecombe and redshirt junior Langston Love, who scored 17 points and 16 points, respectively. The loss of Ojianwuna proved difficult for the team in its game against Houston, losing 65-76.
The men move into their Saturday matchup against West Virginia with a 15-9 record overall, 7-6 in the Big 12 Conference.
