The Baylor Brief – April 4, 2025

We want to keep you up to date on the latest news around the Baylor bubble. This week, travelers beware, Baylor teams run spring sports, basketball team turnover ensues after March Madness run, and more.

Baylor Spring Sports Sync

Baseball – Baylor baseball currently holds a 20-8 overall record, 4-5 in Big 12 Conference play, heading into the weekend’s home series against Houston. The pro ball season is in full swing at my house (go Cardinals!), so I don’t always have time to watch college ball. However, writer Jerry Hill keeps things interesting with his colorfully named baseball recaps, like “RESHUFFLING THE DECK” and “OH, WHAT A RELIEF IT IS!” I can appreciate a good headline.

Softball – The softball team holds a 15-21 overall record, 4-8 in Big 12 Conference play, heading into the weekend’s road series against Houston. Most recently they lost to UCF, but took the series win.

Acrobatics & Tumbling – The A&T team continues its undefeated streak heading into this weekend’s matchup against No. 2 Oregon. The team’s final meet of the year, the NCATA National Championship, will be held April 24. Plus, the Bears have earned NCATA awards in all eight weeks of competition thus far.

Track & Field – The track and field team kicked off its outdoor season with the Clyde Hart Classic at home and Battle on the Bayou in Baton Rouge.

Women’s Tennis – The women’s tennis team this week signed Luna Ivkovic of Zagreb, Croatia to join the team in the fall. The team currently holds a 16-4 record overall, 7-3 in Big 12 Conference play, heading into this weekend’s matchups agains Arizona and Arizona State.

Men’s Tennis – The men’s team’s senior captain Oskar Brostrom Poulsen for the second time this season earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors after a 3-1 overhaul weekend in Utah. The Bears currently hold a 17-8 record overall, 3-1 in conference play, as they gear up for the Big 12 Championships on April 16-20 at the Hurd Tennis Center.

Men’s Golf – This week Baylor men’s golf brought home a No. 6 finish at the Maridoe Collegiate in Dallas. Click here for more updates from recent tournaments, including the General Hackler Championship and Cabo Collegiate.

Women’s Golf – The women’s team heads to College Station next weekend, coming off of No. 15 finishes at both the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate.

Travel Tribulations

Hate airport lines? Good news! Next week (April 7-11) travelers will be able to enroll or renew their TSA Precheck membership at the Hurd Welcome Center. Daily appointments are available from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. According to Baylor’s release, the enrollment process is even faster when the application is filled out online beforehand (use the code SP-Baylor at the end of the online application to see available appointment times).

Meanwhile, an email travel advisory sent last week to all international students across campus warned of possible complications in returning to the U.S. come August after making visits home over the summer. “Federal policies can change, and we cannot guarantee that students who travel outside of the U.S. will not face difficulties or even rejection at the U.S. port of entry upon their return,” the email reads, according to a Lariat article. “Our advice has been and continues to be that students should not travel outside the U.S. unless necessary. In order to minimize your chance of facing any disruptions to your academic program, we advise students to stay in the U.S. for now.”

Team Turnover

Although both Baylor basketball teams’ seasons have come to a close, the news surrounding them is anything but quiet.

This week, the women’s team added two former Auburn Tigers to the roster: guard Taliah Scott and former head coach Johnnie Harris. Scott, a former five-star recruit and Florida Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 2023, averaged 20.3 points and 5.3 rebounds across three games before a wrist injury took her out of the 2024-2025 season. Harris, Baylor’s new associate head coach, holds 27 years of coaching experience.

Senior Jalen Celestine marks the sixth men’s basketball player to enter the transfer portal after a tough season after just one season at Baylor. He’s joined by Jason Asemota, Kaleb Jackson, Omar Adegbola, Yanis Ndjonga, and Langston Love. Love, the longest-tenured Bear, committed this week to Georgetown.

Despite a few losses, the team adds Wyoming’s Obi Agbim, Oregon State’s Michael Rataj, and Omaha’s JJ White to its roster.
