The Baylor Brief – April 25, 2025

We want to keep you up to date on the latest news around the Baylor bubble. This week, spring sports dominate the news (plus a few alumni awards).

Better News for Baylor Basketball

The Baylor men’s basketball team is steadily rebuilding after losing every player from its roster following its March Madness run. The team’s newest addition is Andre Iguodala II, the son of four-time NBA champion of the same name.

One of those lost from the roster was VJ Edgecombe, who this week officially declared for the NBA draft. The former five-star recruit and top player from the 2024 class hopes to play professionally in 2025-2026.

Spring Sports Roundup

WOMEN’S GOLF – The women’s golf team wrapped up the Big 12 Championship in 11th place over the weekend. The team’s performance earned it the No. 7 seed at its eighth-straight NCAA regional appearance. The three-day tournament will take place May 5-7 in Norman, Oklahoma.

MEN’S GOLF – The men’s team teed up at the Big 12 Championship on Tuesday, finishing 13th in round one and 14th on day two. According to the pre-championship roundup, the team would have needed to win the championship in order to earn an NCAA Tournament berth.

WOMEN’S TENNIS – The No. 21 team made it to the semifinal round of the Big 12 Championship, ultimately losing to the Texas Tech team that went on to win the championship. First-year Bear Na Dong was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts, the first Bear to earn the honor since Alicia Herrero Linana in 2021.

MEN’S TENNIS – No. 16 men’s tennis fell to No. 11 Arizona in the Big 12 Championship semifinal. Arizona went on to win the championship. Two singles and two doubles from Baylor were named to the men’s All-Tournament Team

Whether either tennis team will continue on to the NCAA Championship–hosted at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center–will be decided in Monday’s selection show.

BASEBALL – Baylor baseball currently holds a 8-10 record in Big 12 Conference play, 26-14 overall, most recently winning a three-game series over Utah and cruising past HCU in Tuesday’s midweek matchup The team heads into a weekend series at TCU with several games left before the Big 12 Championship, May 21-24.

SOFTBALL – The Bears take on BYU in their last home series of the season this weekend. They’re coming off of a win earlier this week against Texas State, currently holding an 8-10 record in Big 12 Conference play, 23-23 overall.

TRACK & FIELD – The Bears rounded out the Michael Johnson Invitational at home last weekend, four taking gold on day one and two events captured on day two. They head to UCF this weekend and Texas A&M next weekend before capping off the outdoor season with the Big 12 and NCAA championships.

EQUESTRIAN – The No. 9 equestrian team pulled out a 5-7 season record overall, 2-4 in the Big 12 Conference, ultimately falling to Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship semifinals. Three athletes earned All-Big 12 honors: Alexis Rutledge was named Big 12 Horsemanship Rider of the Year, Lauren Reid was selected for the All-Big 12 Flat team, and Lauren Jorgansen was selected for the All-Big 12 Fences team. Rutledge also earned a spot on the All-Big 12 squad, was named Ariat NCEA First Team All-America for Horsemanship, and was named Big 12 Horsemanship Co-Rider of the Month for March.

ACROBATICS & TUMBLING – The No. 1 team headed into the NCATA Championship on Thursday, hoping to defend its 10th-straight national title over the weekend. Though the team has won its last 47 consecutive matches, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported Coach Felicia Mulkey’s pre-season words of caution and humility to her team: “This team hasn’t won anything yet.” Coach Fee has actually won all 13 NCATA national championships, the first four coaching at Oregon, but who’s counting?
