Diadeloso
This year Baylor students celebrated a tradition as old as time with a state fair-themed Diadeloso. Of course, there was goat yoga, lots of food trucks, something called Dia Del Catholic, and live music. This year also featured a concert from Joshua Bassett, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (yes, our social media intern has informed me that is the real name of a real TV show). Anyone else feel like alumni deserve a note to skip work on Dia? See pictures of the day from the Waco Tribune-Herald here.
Breaking Records
In its 74th straight win–that’s four undefeated seasons–the top-ranked Bears completed another perfect season, beating No. 2 Oregon before a record-setting crowd of 2,351 at the Ferrell Center. The team will compete in its last match of the year at the NCATA National Championship on April 24. The only more newsworthy thing this team could do now is lose!
Revival
The three-day FM72 movement has continued to grow since 2019, this year drawing thousands of students to gather and pray under a 10,000-square-foot canopy on Fountain Mall. Some sources say the event dovetails the revival and spiritual awakening seen on college campuses across the country, making parallels to 1945 when Baylor students prayed for 90 straight days for revival.
Breaking Baylor Men’s Basketball
Guard Robert Wright III, the rising sophomore star who was meant to be the centerpiece of next year’s team, entered the transfer portal this week in a surprise move. The All-Big 12 Freshman Team member announced Thursday he would be joining BYU next season. Plus, Fox 44 caught students’ reactions to news of the transfer.
Going Gold
A record four undergraduate students earned Goldwater Scholarships, “the preeminent undergraduate award that supports outstanding undergraduates interested in pursuing research careers in the sciences, engineering and mathematics,” according to a Baylor release. Congratulations to:
- Ava Frescura, junior biology major with a concentration in cell and molecular biology,
- Kiera Griffin, junior Science Research Fellow,
- Aliyah Ogden, junior Science Research Fellow with a focus on neuroscience,
- And Nicholas Storti, senior electrical and computer engineering major.
Concerts Continue at Baylor’s Foster
Lauren Daigle will perform the second public concert at Foster Pavilion at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Baylor parents got first dibs on tickets to see the two-time Grammy winner on Tuesday, followed by Bear Foundation members on Wednesday. Tickets go on sale for the general public at the time of this article’s posting, 10 a.m. Friday, April 11.
Baylor’s Family Weekend will be action-packed, with Daigle in concert on Friday and football versus Samford on Saturday.
Breaking Down Blueberries
A roundtable review of the health benefits of blueberries led by nutrition science expert Dr. April Stull confirmed the huge range of benefits consumers could reap from the small berries.
Did you know anthocyanins, the compounds that give blueberries their hue, are primarily responsible for many of the fruit’s health benefits? Blueberry consumption is linked to lowered overall morality and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cognitive decline–not just stained fingers.
Pressure to Pause
Three Baylor experts researching the impact of rest in and outside of the workplace debunked common myths about break time in the workplace. They found that:
- The employee’s ability to choose how to spend their time drives a break’s effectiveness,
- Energy management may be improved by physically active leisure and connections with family,
- And intentionally pursuing rest outside of work, presumptively seeking refreshment and fighting burnout, can make for a more effective workday.
And on that note, it’s time for me to seek some sunshine. Thanks for reading this week’s Baylor Brief!
