Five Girls, One Costume

 •

Dear Diary,

It was the week before Halloween, senior year, and my roommates and I decided that if there was ever a time to go all out on a costume, this was the time. We began brainstorming ideas, and it only took a few days to finalize the perfect plan.

Caterpillar.

Not caterpillars plural – just one giant caterpillar. Five girls, one costume, and a dream.

The look only took about $30 to assemble. We purchased a child-sized rainbow pop-up tunnel and cut it into four equal pieces, using ribbon to tie them all together and form a train. It was impossible to take a step without pulling the rest of the group along with you.

Once we had the costume on, we realized it was a little trickier to walk than expected without tripping over one another and ending up in a heap on the floor. After a couple of tries (and a few bruises later), we had the hang of it and began our parade down 10th street, stopping into our friends’ and neighbors’ houses along the way to debut our new look.

We also decided to put the costume to use at Sing practice later that Halloween week, and made a valiant attempt to perform in it while all attached, much to the amusement of our sorority sisters.

Okay, as I am writing this, I realize we may sound crazy. But seriously, it was possibly the hardest I have ever laughed.

We left the costume hidden in a back closet after we moved out.

I hope the next girls who live there get some good use out of it.
